A picture I dislike: Indian Fantasy was painted in 1914 by Marsden Hartley. It's name describes what I think Hartley was going for, which was an Indian having a colorful/confusing fantasy. I dislike it because there is too much going on and it is very distracting. This artist was going for an imaginative wonderland and it ended up being a elusive distortion of indian-like figures. I respect the artist because of the clever uses of symmetry, but I am not a fan because of the overwhelming use of hazy symbolics.
A picture I love: The feast of Esther was painted in 1625 by Jan Lievens. I think Lievens was going for a royal figure being served and admired by the subjects surrounding her. I love this because it reminds me of humankind. We all desire for people to admire and serve us to a certain extent. The uses of contrast were simply amazing and my eyes are drawn towards Esther. The painting is very realistic in a sense and I love artists that have the skill of capturing moments of realism in the form of painting.
