Luc Tuymans. Demolition. 2005
Artist: Luc Tuymans
Date: 2005
Name: Demolition

I think that the texture of this painting is the most important quality. The texture is what creates the simple white and grey color scheme to look like clouds billowing out from an explosion. The shapes look like clouds because they are not smooth, they appear to be rough and puffy creating hardness in the picture. However, the picture is still quite soft due to the soft colors, but the texture gives it another dimension of interest and something for your eye to really look at.

For this painting, I found the lines and the value the most interesting parts of the painting. The lines of this painting create a very dynamic background, as well as really emphasize the foreground. Because the lines creating the trees are going the opposite direction of the background, your eye is brought to them, despite the fact that the background is so incredibly bright. But the background also very dynamic, with different lines composed of different colors, it commands attention. There is great value in the background, creating deep colors which really emphasize the sunset and the mix of colors that occur at that time of the day.
