Blog Assignment 2: Two Painting Ideas

Carolyn Hopkins

Blue Pelican
Title: Blue Pelican
Medium: Oil, 2005
Artist: Anthony Hodge

I find the mark making of this painting to be very interesting. The oil strokes are arranged in a certain way that brings the eye in and creates significant movement in the piece. The artist uses very rounded marks that flow in a circular direction on the right side of the painting. The values combined with this mark making creates depth in space and creates a sort of tunneling allusion. It also creates movement
in the main subject of this piece,

Title: Beyond Landscape
Medium: Acrylic
Artist: Anselm Kiefer

The most interesting element used in this piece is texture. The lower half of the painting is very chaotic and busy. I interpret the painting to be of flowers and weeds. The values and strokes used give the weeds a very interesting and intriguing texture. You can see the artist uses layers of thin strokes, dispersing in all different directions, to create a very course texture.
