Paintings I Like and Dislike

Image I like: This untitled painting was created by Josh Smith in 2013. I believe that he made this image to capture the sunset, which is a universal occurrence, in an isolated place, to show that beauty is everywhere. I think he made this the way he did to show both the simplicity and complexity in this image-the simplicity coming from his use of color and lack of blending the colors of the sunset together, and the complexity coming from the detail on the palm trees as well as the actual act of the sun rising or setting. I like this painting because of the use of color, and because of the contrast between the sun rising/setting and the palm trees.

Image I do not like: "Presentation" by Dana Schutz, painted in 2005. I believe the artist made this to show the event of a mutilated body either being buried or exhumed, and the homogenous reactions of the steady stream of onlookers. I think she made the image the way she did to evoke feelings in the viewer that are similar to either those of the onlookers, or of the body. I do not like this painting because of the color scheme and it feels very overcrowded. Also, the open eyes of the corpse make me feel uncomfortable.
